Do Boston Terriers Have To Be Black/White To Be Registered With The AKC? . . . . . . NO

Do Boston Terriers Have To Be Black/White To Be Registered With The AKC? . . . . . . NO

I have been breeding and registering boston terriers with the AKC for years. As a breeder of both black/white and red/while bostons, I receive numerous calls, and e-mails, from people asking about the AKC standards for this wonderful breed. So I have decided to dedicate a page on my website to hopefully clear up any confusion my visitors might have concerning the various colors of these wonderful dogs. AKC Registered red/white boston terriers have been popular in the mid-west for years, and recently their popularity is spreading like wildfire all over the US. And why not, all one has to do is see a photo of one of these little darlings to fall in love with them.

Why Are People So Confused About The Color?

Why Are People So Confused About The Color?

If you were to visit the AKC website located at www.akc.org and enter the word boston terrier as your search you will be directed to a page that lists the AKC standard for this breed. You will notice that they list coat colors of black/white, brindle/white, and or seal/white (which is black with a reddish undercoat) but no place on their website are the colors red/white, brown/white, or chocolate/white mentioned for the boston terrier breed - why is this? The AKC standard, listed on this website, is for SHOW purposes only and currently the only color that meets the standard for show is black/white.

What If I Am Looking For a Champion Show Dog?

What If I Am Looking For a Champion Show Dog?

If you intend on purchasing a puppy with the hopes of entering him/her in the show ring, then I recommend two things; 1. Dont buy from me. My puppies are not show quality. I, and my partners, breed for temperament and companionship. 2. Purchase a black and white puppy that meets with the AKC standard for show.

Then you have come to the right place. As I mentioned earlier I do not breed for show quality dogs and both the AKC and ACA happily registers my companion quality boston terriers in colors described as red/white, brown/white and chocolate/white. I have written documentation from the AKC and as follows, "Puppies born of litters where both the parents are AKC registered qualify for AKC registration. For the Boston Terrier breed, Seal and White (170) would be used to describe a red and white dog. . . ". Although the Seal/white color would be considered black/white with reddish undertones, if the dog were to enter the show ring, this is not the case for companion quality dogs. Companion quality dogs do not have to meet Show Ring Standards to be registered with the AKC.

About Us

We care deeply for every puppy that we bring into the world, and partner with our vet, Dr Knox, in providing the best care available for all our adult dogs and puppies. We use the highest quality vaccines and prescription de-worming medications. Our Puppies receive their first worming at six weeks of age and are then wormed every month until shipped or picked up. Vaccination start at eight weeks of age with Vanguard 5Way and Bordatella and are give every three weeks until shipped or they reach fifteen weeks of age. We insist that our puppies are at least 8 weeks of age before they can leave our care - no exceptions.

We also do our best to ensure that each puppy we produce is placed in the very best homes we can find. Our puppies are introduced to other pets and children as part of their socialization process. In our puppy buyers, we look for loving, responsible owners who have carefully considered their decision to add a Boston Terrier puppy to their lives. Potential buyers should be knowledgeable about the breed and puppy care in general, and be ready, willing and able to accept the responsibilities that go along with Boston Terrier ownership. We want buyers who are committed to providing a loving, forever home for their new Boston Terrier puppy. We will never knowingly sell one of our puppies to; wholesalers, brokers, dealers or retail shops.

We love to keep in touch with our puppies after they leave our home, and enjoy receiving photos and updates on how our babies are doing in their new homes.
